b'Lymphoedema Research why is it important? The lymphatic (lymph) system is arguably one of the most important systems of the body but its importance is only now being realised. We are familiar with blood vessels but not so familiar with lymphatic vessels. Lymphatic vessels are similar tubes but drain clear fluid to lymph glands and are so invisible. The lymphatic system is the cleansing and recycling system of the body. The lymphatic system directs infection to lymph glands to mount an effective immune response; also, the lymphatic system carefully controls the amount of fluid sitting in the bodys tissues. The lymphatic system is responsible for the absorption of dietary fat as well mobilising fat stores such as during dieting. Scientists are only now beginning to understand how influential the lymphatic system is for keeping us healthy.Disturbances in how the lymphatic system works influences many diseases including heart, cancer, infection and obesity. Lymphoedema is one disease resulting from a failure of lymph drainage. An example is a swollen arm following breast cancer treatment. Huge swelling, often called elephantiasis, can affect a leg. Lymphoedema can lead to severe infection and sepsis. Genetic forms of lymphoedema affect children and can be fatal. There is a desperate need to increase research into lymphatic diseases particularly lymphoedema in order to improve understanding and develop new therapies.Professor Peter MortimerMD FRCPSpecialist in LymphoedemaAQUA_body_contentJuly27FINAL.indd 3 27/07/2020 10:49'
