Lymphedema & Lymphatic Disease Matters, August 2020

August 2020

From William Repicci, President & CEO

The height of summer proved to be an especially busy time for LE&RN. We held our first-ever National Action Week, prepared for the launch of additional Centers of Excellence, received a grant from the prestigious Stavros Niarchos Foundation, and were amazed by the ingenuity of LE&RN supporters who held online fundraisers and events.

I am pleased to present you with the August edition of Lymphedema & Lymphatic Disease Matters, which details our most recent initiatives. Our community continues to show incredible resilience and drive in this challenging time. We thank you for joining with us as we stay committed to the fight against lymphatic diseases.

National Action Week draws hundreds to advocacy

The commitment of LE&RN activists brought us closer to realizing the important goals of establishing a National Lymphatic Commission and securing Department of Defense funding for lymphatic research. Over 100 participants joined LE&RN's lively Zoom call on August 11 to talk strategy, find out more about these initiatives, and to ask questions. LE&RN's video, Neglected Lymphatic Diseases, was shared across social media and viewed by thousands. The online book, An American Tragedy: Neglected Lymphatic Diseases was shared with activists and members of Congress.

During National Action Week (August 17-21), activists called and emailed their Congressional representatives and reported results back to LE&RN. With that support, we will be following up with lawmakers and we are determined to see these important agenda items become reality. We thank all the activists who took the time to make a difference.

Centers of Excellence awarded Stavros Niarchos Foundation grant

The first Centers of Excellence in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Lymphatic Diseases were announced at the beginning of summer. Additional Surgical, Referral, and Conservative Care Centers will be announced as we head into fall, followed by a call for new applications.

In July, we received the wonderful news that this exciting project, years in the making, was awarded a Stavros Niarchos Foundation grant.

LE&RN Members get busy with online fundraising

Zac Berger, of Zac's Attack for a Cure, held a 10-hour charity stream on Twitch in support of LE&RN. (Listen to Zac's wonderful radio interview here.) On Friday, August 21, Tina Himaya (pictured here) broadcast footage of her show What About Us? Living with Lymphedema as an online event and fundraiser for LE&RN. A few technical glitches only provided a fun, live feel to the event as Tina jumped on to thank supporters. Donations poured in to Tina's Facebook fundraiser from fans who were able to enjoy a rare 'night out.' Thank you, Zac and Tina, for these fun mid-summer events.
