Huntsman Cancer Institute Earns Comprehensive Cancer Center of Excellence Designation for Lymphatic Disease

LE&RN Recognizes Huntsman Cancer Institute for Exceptional Contributions to Lymphatic Disease Research and Patient Care

Salt Lake City – The Lymphatic Education & Research Network (LE&RN) is proud to announce that Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah has been awarded LE&RN's Comprehensive Cancer Center of Excellence in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Lymphatic Diseases designation.

The designation confirms that Huntsman Cancer Institute offers comprehensive, leading-edge services in one location, with the capability to coordinate all aspects of care for patients who have developed lymphedema due to cancer treatment.

“Our Center of Excellence designation signals to patients that this institution is equipped with the most advanced understanding needed to manage cancer-related lymphedema effectively,” said William Repicci, president and CEO of LE&RN. “Huntsman Cancer Institute exemplifies this commitment, providing crucial support and innovative treatments to improve the lives of those affected in the Salt Lake City area and beyond. This collaboration is fundamental in improving the quality of life for patients and addressing the broader challenges of lymphatic health disparities.”

"This recognition is a testament to our team's relentless dedication to advancing lymphatic disease research and patient care. At Huntsman Cancer Institute, we deliver the highest quality of care, ensuring that every individual receives the support and treatment they need,” says Jay Agarwal, MD, chief of plastic surgery at Huntsman Cancer Institute and professor of surgery at the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah. “Our commitment to addressing the complexities of lymphedema and reducing health disparities remains unwavering, and we are proud to be at the forefront of this vital work."

“At Huntsman Cancer Institute, we offer a spectrum of surgeries, use state of the art imagery, and offer care from our certified lymphedema therapists to provide patients the best lymphedema treatment possible,” says Fatma Tuncer, MD, plastic surgeon at Huntsman Cancer Institute and assistant professor of surgery at the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the  University of Utah. “We are so honored to receive this designation as part of our commitment to serve Huntsman Cancer Institute’s patients in Utah and throughout the Mountain West.”

Lymphedema, particularly secondary lymphedema, represents an estimated 99 percent of lymphedema cases and affects approximately 10 million Americans. Despite its prevalence, lymphedema remains an underappreciated and underfunded public health issue. Studies have shown that Black and Hispanic women are on average three times more likely to develop lymphedema following breast cancer surgery, highlighting significant health disparities.

To earn the Comprehensive Center of Excellence designation, an institution must have at least three Certified Lymphedema Therapists (CLTs) on-site. Additionally, the institution must demonstrate expertise in diagnosis, imaging, conservative management, use of assessment tools, interventional therapies, and lymphatic surgeries performed by at least three qualified surgeons. Proficiency is also required in genetics, patient consultations, research, and ensuring accountability and collegiality.
