Integrating Imaging and Biomechanics for Exploring Lymphatic Pump Failure in Lymphedema

This is a Livestreamed Symposium presented by Brandon Dixon, Ph.D.

Dr. J. Brandon Dixon is an Associate Professor in the Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and director of the Laboratory of Lymphatic Biology and Bioengineering (http://llbb.gatech.edu). His research focuses on elucidating and quantifying the molecular aspects that control lymphatic function as they respond to the dynamically changing mechanical environment they encounter in the body. Through the use of tissue-engineered model systems and animal models, his lab’s research is shedding light on key functions of lymphatic transport, and the consequence of disease to these functions. Dr. Dixon has a B.S. and a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering, both from Texas A&M University where he first began working on lymphatics with Prof. Dave Zawieja. After his PhD, he did postdoctoral research on lymphatic lipid transport in the lab of Prof. Melody Swartz. Dr. Dixon’s research is funded by the Gates Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation. He is a recipient of the NSF Career Award, the NIH Pathway to Independence Award, and the CETL/BP Junior Faculty Teaching Excellence Award.
