I developed lymphedema 5 months after I had a right breast lumpectomy for breast cancer. I was driving one day and noticed my right arm looked really fat. When I grabbed the steering wheel with the left arm, it scared me to death. The next day I went back to the hospital and was diagnosed with lymphedema. My doctor referred me to a specialist where I learned how to keep the swelling under control by wrapping and massaging my arm. She also measured me for a special compression sleeve and glove that I now occasionally have to wear. I also have a portable compression machine by my bedside that I can use, when needed, that really comes in handy when it becomes uncontrollable. There is hope at the end of the tunnel.
