Unique Gibson
Chair, Atlanta Chapter
Unique is a retired social worker with a lifelong commitment to helping others become the best versions of themselves. She is an ardent advocate for body positivity and autonomy, and champions the cause of self-advocacy in healthcare by teaching individuals to assertively navigate the medical system with dignity and resilience. She has a special interest in supporting marginalized populations, namely those considered to be severely obese, by the medical community.
Thru this advocacy Unique encountered lipedema and lymphedema and was dismayed at how prevalent both are in the community, but how scarce information and resources are. While undiagnosed herself, Unique believes her late mother may have had untreated/undiagnosed lipedema. Unique was immediately moved by patients seemingly learning more from other patients than the medical community, and larger patients who lacked compression and treatment equipment that is size proportionate.
Driven by her passion for advocacy and fueled by the desire to effect measurable change, Unique established the Butterfly Ball, an annual Black-Tie Gala, to help bridge the gap between unmet needs and available resources.
Unique is eager to establish the Atlanta Chapter of LE&RN. This chapter will serve as a beacon of support and solidarity for warriors in Georgia, providing a welcoming, inviting, and inclusive environment where individuals can find solace, resources, and collective strength in their journey towards healing.
